GOVERNOR LACHLAN MACQUARIE VISITS KURRAJONG 200TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Lachlan Macquarie

Welcome ...

to the information package for schools.

You are invited to join Governor Lachlan Macquarie and his wife, Elizabeth Macquarie, soldiers and settlers at Kurrajong Memorial Park on Friday, 3 December, 2010.

As part of the Macquarie 2010 celebrations, Kurrajong-Comleroy Historical Society is organising a re-enactment of Governor Macquarie’s visit to
Kurrajong in December, 1810. The aim is to create a memorable
experience for school students, of the Kurrajong area, of this once in a
lifetime event.

Try to imagine Kurrajong 200 years ago. Governor Macquarie included Kurry-Jung in his itinerary for his visit to the Hawkesbury because he wanted to visit settlers in the area who had been granted land in 1809. What an almighty effort it must have been!

Governor Macquarie’s leadership and foresight created the Hawkesbury we know and love today. The naming and locating of the five Macquarie towns is, of course, important for all the Hawkesbury.

To give the event meaningful significance for school students several topics are included below with accompanying integrated classroom activities such as comprehension and competitions. Competition winners will receive their award from 'The Governor', and winning material will be published on this website.

Background information for students can be found in each topic. Additional sources of information are as follows:

Please watch this site for regular additions and updates.

The information and activities included above has been put together by the Kurrajong-Comleroy Historical Society's Macquarie 2010 Schools Sub-Committee as a resource for school students who may be given tasks to carry out relating to Macquarie's visits to the Kurrajong district. Please feel free to source information elsewhere.

The Society has tried to present material which can be used in the classroom. Please feel free to adapt it in any way you wish.

The Society thanks the schools for participating in the 200th Anniversary of Macquarie’s Journey to the Kurrajong District and hopes that students have learned a little more about our area and that it will inspire many to seek further information.

Members of the Kurrajong-Comleroy Historical Society Macquarie 2010 sub-committee are Bea Horacek, Pat O'Toole and Jan Livingstone.
